DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
This position provides communication access (ASL interpreting and coordination) for the staff and customers of the Charlotte Regional Center. Additionally, this staff will identify developmental needs of area interpreters: coordinate and/or provide trainings and skills development; provide information on legal compliance related to interpreting including the ADA, EIPA and NC Licensure Law; develop local interpreter resources and serve as Charlotte Resource Center’s Representative in local interpreter meetings. Travel will include coverage of the region’s 10 counties plus statewide, as needed, occasionally involving nights and weekends.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
Must be N.C. Interpreter & Tranliterator license eligible (meet requirements for application for NC License to interpret) with up to two years of community interpreting experience working with deaf people in signing environment. Related training (deaf education/rehabilitation, interpreter training program), knowledge of ethics of interpreting, deaf culture, process of interpreting; ability to interpret American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Transliterate (English-like sign language). Ability to function as an interpreter both expressively and receptively in a variety of settings: group/individual meetings and presentations; Advanced public speaking skills, excellent English (spoken and written), and computer/office skills. MANAGEMENT PREFERENCE: Ability to serve with an experienced team of Deaf and Hearing professionals; Interest in serving persons that present with a range of hearing status with needs for a variety of communication modes; adaptability with a variety of roles with a team setting.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
An associate degree in an interpreter training program and two years of professional interpreting experience; or high school and four years of professional interpreting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification - if applicable as defined by GS 90d, meet the requirements for licensure as determined by the North Carolina Interpreter and Translator Licensing Board.
