Description of Work
This position is located with the Division of Services for the Deaf
and the Hard of Hearing in the Charlotte Regional Center. This
position provides communication access (ASL interpreting and
coordination) for the staff and customers of the Charlotte Regional
Center. Additionally, this staff person will identify developmental
needs of area interpreters: coordinate and/or provide trainings and
skills development; provide information on legal compliance related to
interpreting including the ADA, EIPA and NC Licensure Law; develop
local interpreter resources and serve as Charlotte Regional Center's
representative in local interpreter meetings. Travel will include
coverage of the region s 10 counties plus state wide, as needed,
occasionally involving nights or weekends
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be a N.C. Interpreter & Tranliterator license-eligible (meet
requirements for application for NC license to interpret) with up to
two years of community interpreting experience working with deaf
people in signing environment. Related training: Deaf education/
rehabilitation, interpreter training program, knowledge of ethics of
interpreting, deaf culture, process of interpreting; ability to
interpret American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Transliterate (English-
like sign language); Ability to function as an interpreter both
expressively and receptively in a variety of settings: group/
individual meetings and presentations; Advanced public speaking skills,
excellent English (spoken and written), and computer/office skills.
MANAGER'S PREFERENCE: Ability to take position on an experienced team
of Deaf professionals. Interest in serving persons that present with
a range of hearing loss with need for a variety of communications
modes; adaptability with variety of roles as representative of state
services.

Training and Experience Requirements
An associated degree in an Interpreter Training Program and two (2)
years of professional interpreting experience; or high school and four
(4) years of professional interpreting experience; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience. Necessary Special
Qualification If applicable as defined by GS 90D, meet the
requirements for Licensure as determined by the North Carolina
Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board. Degrees must be from
appropriately accredited institutions.

NIC Rubric for Interview Portion of Test

The NIC Rubric was introduced for the first time at this workshop!! WHOA! I have been studying really hard for the NIC written test but had no idea the depth and challenge that this next part of the NIC test would be. I have a general overview of how they conduct the interview and how they will base the 5 sections for 5 minutes each on the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct, on how you can take multiple perspectives from all members of the community ex: Deaf, hearing, intperperter, etc. , How you need to focus on short term but also long term effects, etc. They gave out some practice senarios and I have a LOT of notes. I figure after my written test is over and I set up a test date I can really start to focus my attention on this part of the test as well as the preformance...just take one thing at a time. I'm just glad I have a basic understanding of what to expect and an outline of what to study and what they expect from me during the interview portion.
