NCDHR Summer Internship Program for Undergraduate Students
The National Center for Deaf Health Research (NCDHR) has two positions this summer (2011) for students currently enrolled in a degree program and who are interested in investigating and advancing Deaf Health. This flexible program can provide qualified, motivated students with work and research experience, as well as an opportunity to work on a bilingual campus (ASL/English) with Deaf and hearing research faculty, fellows and community partners.
This is a paid, full-time, summer internship program, with the expectation of 40 hours per week for a 6-10 week period commencing in June. Interns are expected to have their own lodging and reliable transportation.
Candidates should have the following attributes:
• A solid academic record (3.0 GPA or higher)
• A major or background in Health science, Social science, Deafness or American Sign Language
• Effective communication (in person / written)
• Creativity
• Attention to organization and details
• Effective task management skills
• Highly motivated
• Dependable
• Team player
• Some knowledge of ASL
Some examples of past intern projects:
Deaf Youth Sports Day – In 2008 and 2009, interns with NCDHR hosted a multi sport day, for fun (non-competitive), during which they took the opportunity to survey and educate participants about Deaf health.
NCDHR RAP (Rapid Assessment Program) – Interns participated on a bilingual / bicultural qualitative research team investigating the functioning and interactions of faculty / community and others at the NCDHR
Obesity video – Year out medical student intern, Heidi Thompson, worked with a student organization within the U of R School of Medicine and Dentistry to write, film and produce an educational video about BMI and obesity.
Deaf Weight Wise – NCDHR is currently adapting and testing an Obesity intervention program which will target Deaf adults aged 40-70. Previous interns have helped develop recruitment materials, reviewed curriculum and developed various materials to support this program.
