Summary of Mentor Program

This whole experience with the Signs of Development Mentor Program has been amazing from the start up until now. In the beginning I felt that I really needed a program like this to help to guide me through my beginning steps as an interpreter. Many parts of the terminology in the field of interpreting I was not aware of and I needed more clarity on the direction I was headed. I had started interpreting with so many questions about the field....and of course I still have so many questions (we are always learning) but I know that I can still turn to Pat and others for guidance. After these 6 months I feel that many of my questions have been answered and more importantly I have a clear understanding of what I am doing now and of my current path. Pat and I sat down a few times and the feedback and support that I got from her gave me the "spark" and direction I needed to delve in the research to the questions I had. Signs of Development-Study for NIC Interview

I am feeling really good about the Signs of Development Study Group. There are so many positive people on the web site but also allows all of us to analyze and understand our actions when interpreting. We can sit back and say to ourselves, "Is this ethical." We have the Code of Conduct 7 Tenets that we have to give us a guideline in our interpreting profession. We learned that there are many other professions, just about everyone that has some kind of guideline. Code of Conduct but all of them directly fit the goal of that particular field of expertise. I've also developed a way for me to memorize the 7 tenets and the rest of the people in the study group have done the same. It is going to be a very challenging but at the end we will all come out to be better interpreters. I'm glad they included this in the NIC test. Times are changing, we are growing upon the ideas that we learned in the past and we need to ensure that the interpreting profession people stay educated...
