Deaf Baseball Player making strides in Minor League Baseball

Ryan Ketchner, a 6’1 lefty out from Wellsville, New York, is currently starring as a starting pitcher for the Double-A team West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx. So why is he being mentioned in this e-newsletter? It’s because Ryan’s deaf, and also because he may become the second deaf baseball player to make it to the Majors in the present day. He’s had one game, in 2005, so far in the Triple-AAA level of baseball, which is the last level before the Majors. How did he do? He only gave up 1 run in 7 innings. Ketchner’s certainly proven that deaf people can pitch successfully, and it may not be long before he makes it to the Majors. The Diamond Jaxx is part of the Seattle Mariners organization, so when he does make it, that’s where he’ll be, in Seattle. For more information on Ryan, you can google him using “Ryan Ketchner”.

Dear All, Last Spring, Wes and I volunteered to act for the Fire Dept training program. Wes pretended to drive and had an accident while I sat at the back and hurt my neck. The deaf woman who showed her ASL sign of the definition for being Deaf is named Linda Cundy. She is my boss for Deaf Seniors. Summary of Mentor Program

This whole experience with the Signs of Development Mentor Program has been amazing from the start up until now. In the beginning I felt that I really needed a program like this to help to guide me through my beginning steps as an interpreter. Many parts of the terminology in the field of interpreting I was not aware of and I needed more clarity on the direction I was headed. I had started interpreting with so many questions about the field....and of course I still have so many questions (we are always learning) but I know that I can still turn to Pat and others for guidance. After these 6 months I feel that many of my questions have been answered and more importantly I have a clear understanding of what I am doing now and of my current path. Pat and I sat down a few times and the feedback and support that I got from her gave me the "spark" and direction I needed to delve in the research to the questions I had. I found all the answers I was seeking plus so much more. Pat re...

Signs of Development-Study for NIC Interview

I am feeling really good about the Signs of Development Study Group. There are so many positive people on the web site but also allows all of us to analyze and understand our actions when interpreting. We can sit back and say to ourselves, "Is this ethical." We have the Code of Conduct 7 Tenets that we have to give us a guideline in our interpreting profession. We learned that there are many other professions, just about everyone that has some kind of guideline. Code of Conduct but all of them directly fit the goal of that particular field of expertise. I've also developed a way for me to memorize the 7 tenets and the rest of the people in the study group have done the same. It is going to be a very challenging but at the end we will all come out to be better interpreters. I'm glad they included this in the NIC test. Times are changing, we are growing upon the ideas that we learned in the past and we need to ensure that the interpreting profession people stay educated...

Paperwork

Looking over my past goals at the beginning of this mentor relationship in Sept. I realize that most of my questions have been answered for my career. 1. How to work on becoming better at Transliterating vs. Interpreting. Understanding what the difference was between these two. -I understand that Interpreting is ASL and Transliterating is signed English. This has helped me greatly understand what is expected with me in different interpreting situations. 2. Getting my NIC certification - I have gone through the Signs of Development program and passed my NIC Written test. Now I am moving on to studying for the performance/interview portion but am much more confident that I can pass this part with some studying. 3. Legal Interpreting- I wanted to get more information on how to get this certificate. -It was so funny because a week after I had discussed it with Pat I got a VIEWS in the mail with a focus on L...
